World Indigenous Day observed at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, August 10 2024:
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed at Leisak Long conference hall at Phungreitang, Ukhrul yesterday.
The event was jointly organised by Discussion Forum Ukhrul (DFU) and Sambu Raiping Shanao Long (SRSL) under the theme 'Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact' .
Hungyohung, DFU convenor, spoke at length about the rights of indigenous people under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Meanwhile, LM Thanmi, DFU co-convener, pointed out that a separate organization for Asian indigenous peoples called Asian Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) was formed to raise the issues safeguard the rights of Asian indigenous peoples.
As a part of the programme, traditional Tangkhul folk songs were performed by Mayo Chithung.
The observation programme was attended by rights activists, women, elders and concerned citizens of Ukhrul town.
