Imphal, May 08 2010:
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has started a drive to check price hike at the shops of Khwairamband market today.
Two volunteers of the student body involved in the drive were rounded up by police but released later.
The drive was conducted to curb the escalation of food price due to the blockade imposed along NH-39 and NH-53 by All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM) and United Naga Council (UNC) against holding of ADC elections under ADC Act 2008 .
Speaking to reporters at its office, AMSU President Irengbam Jamesbond Mangang alleged that the State Government has not taken up any action to control price hike.
Informing that AMSU has started a drive against price hike from today, Jamesbond urged the shop owners not to sell essential commodities in higher price which may add more burden to the general public already disturbed with the prevailing unrest.
He added that 50 kg bags of 16 different essential commodities were seized by an AMSU team from the shops who sold these commodities in higher price in today's drive.
Police arrested AMSU volunteer Salam Kenedy and Human Resource Development Secretary Ningthoujam Deepanjit who were involved in the drive, he lamented.
Hehowever said that they were later released and the seized items were taken away by police.
Urging the State Government to take up necessary measures to control price hike, Jamesbond also demanded for action to those shopkeepers who sell commodities in higher price.
All India Students' Federation (AISF) has also urged the Government to control price rise.
