Imphal, May 08 2010:
Finalising names of Indian national Congress (INC) candidates for the second phase Autonomous District Council election is turning out to be tricky task for the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee as 208 aspirants applied for the party ticket to contest in 72 seats for ADCs of Senapati, Ukhrul and Tamenglong districts.
A meeting of the MPCC's election Committee held today with president (MPCC) Gaikhangam presiding the session and also attended by the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh reportedly failed to finalise party candidates for the second phase poll.
It is informed that another meeting would be held tomorrow after which list of Congress nominees are likely to be officially announced on the same day or on May 10 at the latest.
Mention may be made the State election Commission has fixed May 10 as the deadline for filing nomination papers to be in the fray for the second phase election which would have 3,08,230 voters exercising their franchise right in 468 polling stations.
Meanwhile, MPCC chief Gaikhangam has conveyed thanks to all concerned on the election of 32 Congress nominees without contest in the first phase ADC polling.
He also informed that names of those elected without contest would be intimated to the AICC.
Noting that prevailing situation in some districts where the second phase polling would be held is likely to be problematic, Gaikhangam also appealed to the general public to extent all possible assistance in ensuring free, fair and peaceful election.
