Imphal, October 21 2026:
The traditional Mera Kwak Tanba ritual, observed since ancient times, was held at Sana Konung with the participation of Leishemba Sanajaoba, titular King of Manipur.
Though held on a grand scale in previous years, this year's ritual was observed briefly due to the prevailing situation.
The ritual organised by Uttra Shanglen, Sana Konung was formally opened with the participation of Leishemba Sanajaoba, Angom Ningthou and other dignitaries, with important roles performed by senior 'Maichous' along with religious rites.
This was followed by cultural performances including Pung-Eshei, Pena recital and procession to Sana Konung Lampak, where the main function was held.
Following this, the Lanching Purel of Sana Konung collected this year's "Kwak forecast" and presented the 'Kwak Lanpao' to Leishemba Sanajaoba.
Later, Leishemba Sanajaoba proceeded to Kwak Shang and performed prayers and rituals inside "Mityengphu" and Kwak Shang.
On the sidelines, replying to queries, Leishemba Sanajaoba said that to end the current state of unrest, those in power need to work sincerely and with integrity.
He said the public can achieve anything if there is strong will, and urged those in governance to respect public sentiment and do what is needed.
He said if appeasement policies continue to please sections of people from time to time, even if the fire is doused today, it will flare up again tomorrow causing more suffering.
The people of Manipur are in a state of endurance and suffering today and have many grievances.
Therefore, those in power should understand the pulse of the people and take appropriate concrete steps, he added.
On the occasion, Leishemba Sanajaoba also felicitated six newly nominated members of the Manipur Royal Advisory Council, which was revived after a long gap, by presenting Khamen Chatpa Mana Phee as a mark of respect.
The new members are former Vice Chancellor of Manipur University of Culture Prof Paonam Gunindro, Vidyapati Senjam, Namoijam Tomba, Dr Waikhom Romesh, Sougrakpam Hemanta and former Member Secretary of Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board Meisnam Shivadutta Luwang.
In addition, renowned Meitei folklore exponent Hamom Dhani, appointed as Hanjaba of the newly opened Puya Loishang, and Huirem Ojit, appointed as Shanglakpa of Apoklon Loishang, were also honoured.
Leishemba Sanajaoba said Kwak Tanba is a sacred ritual observed since the time of Nongda Lairen Pakhangba.
It is primarily observed to drive away evil and foreign elements, for the land to remain peaceful and for love and unity among communities.
Meanwhile, under the aegis of Shree Shree Govindajee Temple Board, Pandit Loishang and Cheirap Loishang jointly organised this year's Mera Kwak Tanba ritual at the Pandit Loishang complex of Shree Shree Govindajee Temple.
The observance was marked by various pujas, traditional Thang-Ta demonstration, Thougal-Jagoi and Maibi Jagoi.
