India, Myanmar resolve to beef up war against drugs

Moreh, June 30 2010: Authorities of India and Myanmar have mutually decided to strengthen checking of drug smuggling across the international border.

The decision was taken at the Indo-Myanmar Basic Contact Field Level Officers' Meeting on Drug Control held at 11am today at the office chamber of the Immigration Office, Tamu organised by Anti Narcotics (Special) Task Force, Tamu, Myanmar.

Officiating Superintendent of Police, Tamu district, Police Captain Aye Myint Kyi led the delegation of Myanmar and Additional Superintendent of Police, Moreh, Y Ashokumar Singh led the delegation of Manipur, India.

Today's meeting discussed four agenda, namely, a) Sharing of seizure achievements and discussions on the seizures relating to the trafficking across the border; b) Trends of drug trafficking and modus operandi adopted by the traffickers across the border; c) How best both countries can make joint effort detecting and control of drug trafficking across the border; d) Date schedule for the next round of meeting on the coming 27th of Sept.2010 at Moreh-Manipur-India.

Welcoming the delegates of India, Pol Capt Aye Myint Kyi said that the Myanmar authority had registered five cases of drug smuggling during the last two months.

The cases are related to smuggling of heroin (No.4), opium, stimulant tablets, etc.

The Myanmar authority had seized six lakh pieces of NAM COLD tablet while being taken to Mandalay in Myanmar by some persons.

On interrogation, they disclosed that the tablets were supplied by five persons from Moreh, among whom two had been identified.

Both of them are residing at Moreh Ward No..1Investigation is going on to establish the identities of the three other persons.

They would also be known soon, the Myanmar authority said adding that legal action would be taken against them.

The police officer of Myanmar appealed to the Indian counterpart to extend cooperation.

The Myanmar authority provided the Indian delegation a list of drugs some of which were used as life saving drugs in India but as drugs in Myanmar.

The drugs are 1)SOLKUF, 2) BROKUF, 3) BROXID, 4) COLD GO, 5) NAM COLD-L, 6) ACTIPIN, 7) ACTIPHATE, 8)ALPRAZOLAM, 9)LORFAST-D & 10) PEPTICA.

In addition to these, other pharmaceutical products containing more than 60ml of Sudo Ephedrine have been banned in Myanmar.

Such drugs are being smuggled from various parts of India into Myanmar where these are mixed with other chemicals and drugs, and different drugs are made.

For instance, such drugs as OK, WY tablets are thus made and exported to various South East Asian countries from Myanmar.

The meeting resolved to find ways and means to stop smuggling of these drugs.

The next meeting of the Field Officers will be held on September 27 this year at Moreh, Manipur, India.
