Imphal, December 21 2010: Giving a deadline of three days, the Democratic Students' Alliance Manipur (DESAM) has decided to shut down the S Kumar Nursing Institute situated at Porompat if its authority fails to communicate with DESAM and the parents of its students.

In a press meet held at its head office at Keishampat, Wangmayum Islauddin, Vice President, DESAM said that a serious matter emerged when the authority of the institute failed to issue admit cards to its students with examinations just a few days away.

DESAM informed the authority of the institute to talk over the matter when parents of some students of the institute appealed to DESAM for help.

The authority however failed to attend the talks scheduled today.

It is clear from the conduct of the authority that the institute is a unrecognised institution.

They had claimed in the past that the institution was affiliated to the National Institute of Medical Sciences, Silchar, but DESAM has realised that this is not so.

The institution has so far collected around ' 28 lakh from its students in the past one year.

At present there are 16 ANM and 19 GNM students in the institute.

The institute charges admission fees of ' 26,000 and ' 36,000 from each student in the ANM and GNM courses respectively.

The monthly tuition fees of ANM and GNM courses are ' 3600 and ' 4100 respectively.

The institute also charges ' 1250 and ' 1750 from each student for filling up forms for the annual examinations for ANM and GNM courses.

Over and above this the institute also charges additional fees for practical examinations and uniforms.

Islauddin charged that the institute has failed to issue admit cards to its students after having collected huge amounts of money.

A trust comprising of four persons is running the institute.

Yumnam Surjitkumar is the Managing Director of the trust.

The other trustees are Yumnam Dilip, chairman, Yumnam Ingba, founder and Devananda member.

All of them are from Keinou in Bishnupur district.

They are also running a paramedical and acupressure hospital in the same institute.

DESAM has stated that if they fail to respond to its invitation for talks within three days the institute will be shut down.

A student of the institute who attended the press meet said that the authority told them that the institute is recognised by both MNC and INC and is affiliated to the National Institute of Medical Sciences, Silchar.

The authority however refused to show the affiliation papers when demanded.

Expressing serious concern about the loss of valuable time, the students of the institute have appealed to all concerned to take up necessary action against the authority of the institute.
