Imphal, July 15 2024:
Transgender activist Malem Thongam has submitted a memorandum to Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) urging Opposition Congress to mount pressure on the Government to bring about a resolution to the Manipur crisis.
The memorandum was addressed to MPCC president MLA K Meghachandra and it was received by Kh Debabrata, working president of the party at Congress Bhavan today.
At Congress Bhavan, Malem said the memorandum was submitted urging the Opposition Congress to mount pressure on the Government to bring about peace during the coming Budget session.
The State's Budget session has been scheduled to begin on July 31 .
Malem denounced the State Government and the Centre for not taking up decisive actions to end the crisis and added that the Prime Minister's recent speech on the Manipur crisis lacked substance and was irresponsible.
Violence has not ceased even after a year and the people of the State are not happy with the Government's handling of the crisis, Malem said.
Malem said she has tried several times to meet and speak with the Chief Minister but she has not been given an appointment.
She said she wants to meet and speak with the Chief Minister on the Manipur crisis, and wishes for the Prime Minister to visit Manipur.
Meanwhile, the memorandum she submitted urged the MPCC and the Opposition to put pressure on the Government on the crisis during the Budget session.
It urged the Opposition to up a strong case of disapproval against State Government's inaction against "Kuki terrorists" who are openly breaking the ground rules of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement.
It demanded disqualification and removal of the 10 Kuki MLAs from the State Assembly who are determined to destroy the territorial integrity of Manipur.
It urged the Opposition to put pressure on the Government to end firing in adjoining areas of the valley and the hills as the first step towards restoring peace and tranquillity in the State.
MPCC working president Kh Debabrata assured Malem of action on her memorandum.
