Imphal, October 02 2009: Governor of Manipur, Gurbachan Jagat has said that Mahatma Gandhiji's message for peaceful co-existence has become increasingly relevant in the present situation of Manipur, which is a miniature of India, to ensure peace and harmony in society.

The Governor said this while addressing a large gathering during the observance of the National Cleanliness Day to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Memorial hall (GM hall) here this morning.

Governor Gurbachan Jagat, Chief Minister O Ibobi, cabinet ministers, MLAs, top civil and police officials offered wreaths and floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi located at the GM hall and paid homage to the Mahatma, also fondly known as Father of the Nation.

The offering of homage started at 8.30 am today.

Governor Jagat, who was the chief guest at the observance function, recalled the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi in his speech.

He said, Mahatma Gandhi led the nation in its struggle for freedom from the British yoke using non-violence (Ahimsa) as his most powerful weapon.

Mahatma Gandhi was a real "Karmayogi" and apostle of truth and non-violence, a symbol of indomitable soul-power, the governor said, adding that he firmly stood for the cause of the down trodden and oppressed not only in India but also in other parts of the world.

Governor Jagat further said, "Gandhiji regarded the political independence of India as a beginning to real freedom, that is, economic freedom the country".

He said, "Truly, Mahatma Gandhi is the greatest theorist and practioner of truth, non-violence and tolerance.

According to him- a person who believes in non-violence believes in a living God.

He can not accept defeat".

The governor called upon the present generation to imbibe the virtue of non-violence, tolerance and humanism from the life of Mahatma Gandhi so that it will usher in a new era of hope and prosperity.

His messages are of great relevance to this world beset with turmoil and uncertainty, he said.

The Governor also said that a clean environment is a must for good health which will beget a pure mind.

"While observing the day by cleansing our surroundings, we should resolve to maintain the state of cleanliness as a regular feature to make the National Cleanliness Day meaningful".
