2 die in childbirth, allegations fly thick and fast

Family members of two young housewives, who died in two different child birth related cases in the last 24 hours have accused the doctors and nurses of RIMS and Langol View Clinic of negligence.
In the first incident, a 28 year old woman, identified as Sinam Ichan Devi w/o Kiranchandra of Sekmai Kowjeng Leima, was declared dead by the doctors at RIMS Hospital, soon after she was admitted to the ICU after giving birth to a baby girl.
S Tani Devi, the sister inlaw of the deceased woman stated that from the beginning the deceased Ichan, used to consult a doctor of RIMS and on February 21, when she went for a routine checkup at RIMS, she was asked to get admitted at the hospital by the doctor.
Ichan was rushed to the labour room after complaining of abdominal pain yesterday at around 11 am, and a baby girl was born reportedly in normal delivery at around 5.30 pm, Tani explained.
She alleged that the doctor on duty and the staff of RIMS, did not inform the family members whether the child birth was through normal delivery or through operation and also failed to provide any necessary documents.
Tani said that when she went to the room to look after Ichan after a heated argument with the hospital authorities, Ichan began complaining about chest pain and difficulties in breathing.
However, Tani claimed that when she rushed to inform the hospital authority about the deteriorating condition of the patient, no one listened to her.
Later Ichan was shifted to the ICU and soon after, she was declared dead.
Accusing the doctors and nurses of RIMS of wilful negligence, Tani said that if they had listened to the appeals made by the family members, the unfortunate incident might have been avoided.
K Amubi, secretary of Advance Women Society Awang Sekmai, stated that the dead body will not be claimed until and unless the authority concerned take up necessary actions against the doctors and nurses involved in the case.
The secretary also informed that the association has lodged an FIR at Lamphel police station regarding the same.
In the second incident, 28 years old Kshetrimayum Prameshwari Devi w/o Ksh Raju of Kakching Moirangthem Leikai, was also declared dead by the doctors at RIMS ICU today.
Speaking to media persons at RIMS morgue, Ksh Raju claimed that he and his deceased wife, used to consult a doctor of Langol View Clinic from an early stage.
On the morning of February 22, Prameshwari gave birth to a baby boy through cesarean section at Langol View Clinic and she was kept in a separate room for the whole day without allowing any of the family members to meet her.
He said that the next day, due to rising suspicion, the family members approached the hospital authority and asked for a chance to meet the patient as not a single document related to the delivery of a child was provided to the family members.
The husband claimed that on the same day, at around 3.30 pm, the doctor referred Prameshwari to RIMS ICU as her condition was allegedly critical, but failed to say a single word to the family members after that.
After she was kept in RIMS ICU for three days, Prameshwari was declared dead by the doctors at around 12.15 am today.
The family members alleged that the doctor did not utter a single word in connection with the treatment of Prameshwari at RIMS ICU and left the family members solely responsible for making efforts to save her life.
They also claimed that after the incident, the doctor approached them for bringing a negotiation.
They also said that they will never resort to a negotiation regarding the matter and will fight through legal proceedings to give befitting punishment to the doctor.
A case has been registered at Lamphel PS as UD case and the family members claimed that dead body after a post mortem was conducted at RIMS morgue in the presence of the Duty Magistrate with full video coverage.
