AR jawan killed, civilian hurt in blast

Imphal, November 25 2013: A powerful bomb exploded at the high security zone of Keishampat near Power House here, killing one jawan of Assam Rifles and injuring a shopkeeper at around 3.50 pm today.

The deceased jawan has been identified as Rajiv Sharma (34), who hails from Haryana while the injured person as Mutum Komon (50) of Sagolband Meino Leirak.

Rajiv Sharma sustained multiple splinter injuries in the blast, and later he succumbed to his injuries at RIMS Hospital.

On the other hand, Komon fainted on hearing the deafening sound of the explosion but he did not sustain any major injury.

According to police, the bomb exploded at the gate of Zonal Water Reservoir Complex near Keishampat Power House which is just about 40 metres from the Raj Bhavan under the jurisdiction of Imphal Police Station.

The explosion site is usually manned by personnel of Manipur Police along with Commandos patrolling in the area 24X7.Moreover, personnel of 40 Assam Rifles, Chinga Post usually take rest near the Reservoir Complex after coming back from their patrol duty.

The bomb was supposedly planted inside the gate of the Reservoir Complex.

It went off exactly after some Assam Rifles personnel crossed the gate of the Complex.

Some portion of the wall fencing and a grocery shop located adjacent to the complex were ripped apart by the explosion.

The manner of explosion is somewhat similar to the recent blast occurred at Zonal Reservoir Complex at North AOC.

The impact of the blast created a 3 ft deep crater.

No outfit has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.

On hearing the news of the bomb blast, a large number of police personnel including high ranking officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Bomb experts of Manipur Police and sniffer dogs of Assam Rifles were also called in to search for more possible bombs in the area by blocking the main road for several hours.

It may be recalled that on October 30, an IED detonated at a bus waiting shed at Moirangkhom along Imphal-Moreh road claimed two passenger van drivers and left five others injured.

The deadly attack came a day after an explosion that took place at Dharmasala in Thangal bazaar in the heart of Imphal city that wounded five people.

No group has also claimed responsibility for the these two attacks till date.
