Risk of cyber threats highlighted at awareness programme for police personnel

The National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) Senapati organized an awareness workshop for senior police officials of Senapati district today as part of the project "Empowering police personnel and government officials of North East states through IT and cyber security training".
The programme was held at the conference hall of SP Office Complex, Senapati.
On the occasion, KL Rita Kho, Project Associate, NIELIT Senapati spoke on understanding cyber threats.
She said with increased reliance on technology for communication, work and entertainment comes at an increased risk of cyber threats.
Kho highlighted that cyber threats include any attempts to disrupt, damage, or misuse a computer system, network or device.
She said these threats target individuals, organizations, or Governments to steal data, compromise systems, or cause disruption.
Through a slide show, the NIELIT Project Associate explained the types of cyber threats including malware like viruses, worms, Trojan horses, ransomware, spyware in phishing attacks like social engineering scams to steal personal information, in denial-of-service (DoS) attacks like overwhelming systems with excessive traffic, in man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks like intercepting communications between two parties, in zero-day attacks like exploiting vulnerabilities that the software vendor is not even aware of yet, in social engineering like exploiting human psychology to manipulate users into compromising their security, in SQL injection attacks like injecting malicious code into databases to gain unauthorized access and steal sensitive data, in password attacks like stealing or cracking passwords using brute-force or dictionary methods to access accounts.
She said that cyber crime targets individuals, businesses and Governments.
Other speakers of the day include faculty members Rokhu Moses, D Elia and LS Veisounii who spoke on topics like "Artificial Intelligence", "Introduction on emerging technology (block chain)", "Protective measures and best practices", and "Ethical and legal considerations (data protection and privacy laws)" .
The programme was attended by police officers of Senapati district including SIs and the Additional SP .
