Thoubal, May 17 2024:
The State has turned a deaf ear to the pleas made by families of the seven men arrested in connection with the May 4 nude viral video case, to conduct their legal proceedings in Manipur, said the Joint Action Committee.
Addressing the media at a press conference held at Nongpok Sekmai Bazar Community Hall, Mani Khuman, JAC Convenor, said that at present the families of the seven men are travelling to Kamrup, Assam with great difficulty for the case.
Accusing the Indian and Manipur Government of not assigning a suitable venue for the legal proceedings, he informed that the families of the seven men are daily wage earners and hence facing a lot of impediments in travelling to Kamrup, Assam.
Thus, he urged the State Government to transfer the case to a Court in Manipur.
Stating that even accused persons involved in murder cases are granted bail after three months, Mani termed it a gross violation of human rights that individuals have been jailed for a year for "merely viewing the video on their phone".
Drawing the attention of State CSOs on this issue, the JAC convenor further informed that a public meeting will be held in this connection in Thoubal district in the near future.
Meanwhile, Pukhrambam Langlen, wife of one of the seven, claimed that her husband was arrested for viewing the nude viral video of the two Kuki women on his phone after somebody sent it to him.
Stating that her husband met the needs of their household as a daily wage earner, she added that she does not have the means to face the case in Kamrup.
Thus she urged the State CSOs and Government to help her incarcerated husband.
