Many condemn shutting of Ithai barrage shutter

The incessant rain in the State have resulted in flooding of houses, fish farms, paddy fields and overflowed several lakes and canals.
Amidst the grave flood situation in areas near Loktak, Bishnupur district, the water level of the area increased suddenly due to closing of the doors of Ithai barrage .
According to the people, the surrounding areas had been slowly recovering from the recent flood when the water again rose today morning.
When the people went to investigate the source of the flood, they discovered that three out of the five shutter of Ithai dam were shut down .
Thinungei Gram Panchayat ward no 5 member Ghanashyam Singh who also took part in the protest said that the dam was responsible not only for the loss of land, resources and livelihood of the nearby people but is now also the source of flood and hardship for the people and their properties .
He further urged the authority concerned to remove and abandon the Ithai dam project as it is causing more harm then good to the people .
Moirang Assembly Youth Congress Committee also urged the authority concerned to open the doors .
On the other hand, a junior engineer of NHPC, Ukaputam met with the people and upon reaching a solution and an agreement, opened three doors of the barrage thus easing the tense situation .
Speaking to media persons, the Junior Engineer said that the doors had been closed as the water level of Loktak had decreased but assured that the higher level authority will take up necessary steps to open the barrages doors and ease the impact on the people.
