Foundation day of ICAR-NISA celebrated

The 101st Foundation Day of ICAR-National Institute of Secondary Agriculture (NISA), Ranchi was celebrated today at the auditorium ofCollege of Agriculture (COA), Iroisemba, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal.
The event organised by AINP-Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources, COA, Iroisemba, CAU, Imphal was graced by Dr KI Singh, Professor & Pl of the project, COA, Iroisemba; Dr L Nongdren-khomba Singh, Professor (Plant Pathology), COA, Iroisemba and Dr Edwin Luikham, Professor (Agronomy), COA, Iroisemba as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Khumukcham Ibohal, Head, Department of Entomology, COA, CAU Imphal said that ICAR-NISA, formerly, Indian Lac Research Institute is a unit of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
He asserted that the institute established in September 20, 1924, is one of the oldest institutions within the ICAR system, having completed 99 years of fruitful services to the Nation.
"Lac is the second most profitable insect after honeybees and silkworms", said Dr Ibohal while adding that Lac is used in the manufacture of toys, ornaments, electrical insulating materials, varnishes, polishes, lithographic inks, shoe polishes, sealing wax, etc.
Notably, the centenary celebration of ICAR-NISA held at Ranchi, Jharkhand was graced by President Droupadi Murmu.
