Surviving families of alleged fake encounter victims gifted looms

Imphal, May 13 2018: In continuation of their efforts to empower women and help them generate income, the Socialist Students' Union Manipur with Proletariat Peoples' Democratic Union (PPDUM) and Proletarian Feminist Movement, Manipur (PFMM) yesterday presented looms to three surviving families of victims of alleged fake encounters.

On receiving the loom, Chongtham Ongbi Leinou, mother of Chongtham Ojit who was killed in an alleged fake encounter in March 2010, expressed gratitude to the organisations who visited the house.

Chongtham Ojit was allegedly taken from his house at Waikhong Awang Leikai, under then Thoubal district, by the Assam Rifles and was allegedly killed in an encounter.

Chongtham Ojit is survived by his two children and his widow mother.

"I have lost all hope on the Government.

I will no longer approach the Government for any kind of help," said Leinou who is looking after the two grandchildren pointing out the lack of apathy on the part of the Government.

The organisations also visited and presented looms to surviving families of Akongbam Oken and RK Brajamani alias Bijuli.

Akongbam Oken was killed in an alleged fake encounter in September 2009.The loom was presented to his wife Akongbam Ongbi Tombi at his residence at Langol Housing Complex.

RK Brajamani alias Bijuli was killed in an alleged fake encounter in October 2009.RK Ongbi Chaoba wife of the victim received the loom today at her residence at Thanga.

Speaking to media persons, publicity and propaganda convenor of the Socialist Students' Union Tanoranjan Naorem said that the joint effort of the organisations will continue in the future.

Many of the surviving families of the victims of alleged fake encounters that happened in the State are still in dilemma of the killings.

Many of the families are poor and have little to no means of income generation, Tanoranjan said.

Taking note of the ongoing investigations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged fake encounter cases, he urged the concerned authorities, organisations and departments of the State to extend all possible helps to the investigations for speedy conclusion.

He further appealed the Government to extend its reach to the surviving families and provide its assistance.

President of the Extra-Judicial Execution Victims' Families Association Renu Takhellambam, secretary PPDUM Somananda and other representatives of the organisations took part in the ventures.
