Imphal, December 27 2009:
At least 60 metric tonnes of turmeric are being expected in yield from turmeric plantation being undertaken in 15 hectares at Kamong village in Imphal West district.
The turmeric plantation is being undertaken by the Nongchup Imphal Loumee Shinmee Chaokhat Thourang Lup in collaboration with Horticulture Department and College of Agriculture, CAU.
Talking to media persons at the turmeric farm today, secretary of the Nongchup Imphal Loumee Shinmee Chaokhat Thourang Lup Thoiba Konthoujam said that the project was initiated under Technology Mission of Horticulture Department which also provided the saplings.
The saplings provided by Horticulture Department were planted in 12 hectares whereas College of Agriculture, CAU provided the required saplings for the remaining three hectares.
So far, Rs 2.22 lakhs have been spent on the farm.
Confiding that they have been expecting at least 60 metric tonnes of turmeric in yield, Thoiba said that the project would be taken up on a larger scale next season if is found profitable this time.
He further conveyed that farmers of Kamong and surrounding areas have been taking greater responsibility to ensure success of the project.
