A fake currency racket operating in Indo-Myanmar border area has been busted together with the arrest of the racket's kingpin and proprietor of a computer centre where the fake currency notes were printed.
Acting on specific information about a racket led by one Md Achou alias Sagir Ahmad (33) s/o late Abdul Helim of Lilong Haoreibi Mayai Leikai circulating fake currency notes, a team of Lilong Police pulled up Md Achou from his home in the morning of February 13. Speaking to media persons, OC of Lilong police station Md Chaoba said that based on the disclosure made by Achou and information gathered from sources, another police team including himself and second OC Md Anamudin raided Computer World located at Moirangkhom in the afternoon of the same day.
The computer centre was owned and run by one Laishram Bullet (32) s/o late Sarat of Wangkhei Pukhrambam Leirak.
One computer set, two CDs containing software for printing counterfeit currency notes, one colour laser-jet printer, two printer cartridges and one fake currency note of 500 denomination were recovered from Bullet's possession.
Md Achou and Bullet were produced before the CJM Thoubal yesterday who remanded them to police custody for five days, said Inspector Chaoba.
It has been learnt that fake currency notes of face value Rs five lakhs have been printed in the computer centre and circulated on four/five occasions since 2007. Fake currency notes of face value Rs one lakh were exchanged for Rs 50,000 to 60,000 and these were circulated in border areas more commonly for buying timber and cattle.
