Imphal, August 31 2024:
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has launched a campaign in pursuit of six different demands including resolution of the 16 months old Manipur crisis through dialogue.
The campaign was launched today at the residence of AITUC Imphal City Committee secretary Kh Shamungou at Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai.
The five other demands which the campaign seeks to address are establishment of a highway protection force, putting an effective control on extortion, raising wages of workers, decommissioning of Loktak Project and implementation of a new labour code.
Launching the campaign, AITUC Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar asserted that the 16 months old Manipur crisis must be resolved without any further delay through dialogue.
There is no other option than dialogue to resolve the crisis, he said.
Pointing out that different armed groups have been collecting hefty illegal taxes from vehicles plying on National highways and the Meitei people are being denied access to National highways, Sotinkumar stressed the need to set up a highway protection force.
In the meantime, rampant extortion has crippled several small businesses.
The Government must find a solution to this problem too at the earliest, he said.
