MMWO clarifies, urges against spreading rumours

Imphal, May 30 2019: Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has clarified that Farida Begum, wife of Rizwan (a resident of UP who was arrested on May 24), is not a Meitei Pangal.

Speaking to media persons at MMWO HQs in Minuthong Hafiz Hatta, the organisation's HRD secretary Chengsabam Achouba stated that Farida, wife of Rizwan (who was arrested for being a fugitive in UP by a team of Delhi police and State police on May 24 from Golapati) does not belong to the Meitei Pangal community, as claimed in the local dailies.

He went on to state that Farida is the daughter of one Amir (a Bengali) from Assam's Sonai town and her father-in-law's name is Ayub Khan.

Both Rizwan and Farida Begum were staying in a rented room, owned by one Abdul Helim in Golapati, Achouba claimed.

He clarified that the allegations which were published on social media sites and local dailies stating that the non Manipuri, Rizwan is staying in the State by marrying a Meitei Pangal woman, are wrong and baseless.

The news is going viral in social media sites as a result of publishing it without properly cheeking the facts of Farida Begum, he maintained and urged all media houses to investigate properly and take extra caution while carrying a news.

He said that Farida Begum is not related to the said community adding that a Muslim outsider cannot be considered a Meitei Pangal if he/she comes to the State and speaks the native language.

Achouba further urged social media users and the public to be aware of the facts before posting any comment or trolling a particular community as it could lead to tension and misunderstanding between the communities.

He also appealed to the people, especially those who are renting out rooms, to carry a background check of the individual (s) and verify them before approving their stay.

Maintaining that the time has called for the organisation to keep a strict vigil on such matters, he sought the public to extend support and cooperation to MMWO.
