Imphal, March 20 2016:
The JAC Against the 'Anti-tribal' Bills has expressed its heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to all the tribal people from across Manipur and beyond for their overwhelming response towards their appeal for co-operation and support to mark the 200th day of mourning and relentless struggle against the subjugation, marginalisation policies of the Manipur Government towards the tribal people of Manipur.
A statement of the JAC said that their call for a 15-hour total shutdown of the tribal territories/hill areas of Manipur starting from the midnight of March 17 saw the first ever volunteer-free shutdown in Lamka, which was possible due to the resounding solidarity shown by the citizens of the town, the epicentre of the ongoing Tribal Movement.
The traditional gun salute to the nine tribal martyrs whose mortal remains still await a sustainable solution for their fellow tribals and an honourable burial, as well as the mass prayers led by Church leaders followed by the release of 200 flying lanterns by 200 Pastors and Church elders at Lamka Public Ground was possible due to the co-operation and support of the public.
In addition to Lamka, the total shutdown and traditional gun salute to the nine tribal martyrs was also observed in other hill district headquarters including Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong and Chandel.
The JAC also thanked the organizers and participants of the prayer fellowship held to mark the day at Jantar Mantar under the aegis of Manipur Tribals' Forum, Delhi for showing their continued and unflinching support and co-operation towards the Manipur Tribal Movement.
