Imphal, May 14 2021:
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the State Government to carry out the Covid vaccination drive on a war footing.
In a statement, the trade union said that the second wave of the Covid pandemic and the subsequent imposition of curfew, though necessary, in the districts of Manipur is throwing life out of gear.
It pointed out that putting a restriction on movements as well as activities is taking a toll especially on those who are living hand to mouth.
Stating that many States in the country are providing essentials to their people free of cost, he added that such an initiative is not yet started by the State Government other than certain individuals distributing relief packages to households in containment zones.
Due to loopholes in the guidelines issued by the Government and many violating the SOPs for COVID-19, the number of Covid cases and related deaths in the State is rising rapidly, said AITUC, further urging the Government to revise the guidelines by consulting with health experts.
The Education Department, BOSEM and COHSEM should also consider resuming online classes, it said, urging the Government to provide a mobile phone to students who can't afford one for attending the virtual classes.
The AITUC further urged the Government to distribute other edibles, apart from rice, under NFSA.
