Imphal, September 29 2012:
The prevailing conflict situation in Manipur has been raising the cases of heart infections and heart related diseases in the State, said heart surgeon Dr Ksh Kala during World Heart Day observance at Raj Polyclinic today.
The World Heart Day is observed every year on September 29 since 2000 with the basic objective of identifying the potential causes of heart diseases and early detection of heart infections.
Addressing the function, Dr Kala said that frequent cases of bomb blasts, gun fire and intimidation by serving monetary demands have considerably raised the number of heart infections in the State.
To ward off heart diseases, one must be free from any kind of tension, and one must avoid tobacco products.
One must maintain one's blood pressure at a healthy level and people should maintain their body weights.
One must do regular exercise and consume minimum sugar and salt.
There are many forms of heart diseases including congenital heart diseases, rheumatic heart diseases, and heart diseases caused by obesity, hypertension etc, Dr Kala said.
Common causes of congenital heart diseases are viral infection (to mother) during pregnancy, injury on abdomen due to accident or assault by someone, consumption of alcohol by pregnant women, heart infection to parents, use of hormones and lithium for treating diabetes during pregnancy, taking X-ray and MRI during the first three months of pregnancy etc.
Chances of heart attack among elderly women are also high.
Rate of mortality due to heart diseases is higher among women than men, said Dr Kala.
The function was attended by Raj Polyclinic senior physician Dr Dijamani and managing director H Rajen as chief guest and president respectively.
