Jiribam, July 15 2024:
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) assistant coordinator Joychandra Konthoujam has urged relevant authorities to facilitate swift transportation of fertilizer stock stranded at Jiribam to Imphal.
He made the appeal while leading a COCOMI team in conducting an inspection of Jiribam railway station today.
Reportedly, Joychandra also met Jiribam transporters and shared that ten trucks have left for Imphal today.
Many CSOs have raised slogans advocating for self-reliance in food production but fertilizers which are necessary for farmers are lying at Jiribam railway station.
This shows the State Government's weakness, he said.
It is also a display of weakness on the part of the Minister concerned that steps have not been taken up to transport the urea alloted for the State to Imphal and resolve the fertilizer shortage.
The Government is aware that Manipur requires 15,000 metric tonnes of urea and the hardships in transporting them along the hill routes.
However, being aware of the issues but not tackling them is shameful, he added.
Stating that the Government pays for transportation of urea per kilometre, he advised transporters to refrain from bidding in any tender if they cannot move the products.
The COCOMI assistant coordinator further cautioned that COCOMI Farmers' Wing will launch an intense agitation if the State Government fails to provide urea to farmers at the earliest.
Members of COCOMI Women Wing and COCOMI Students' Wing were also present at the inspection visit.
