Jiribam, May 29 2010:
Atleast five persons including four women were killed and another five sustained injuries when the Shaktiman they were travelling on turned turtle at Babupara Pangaltabi along National Highway 53 in Jiribam today.
The ill-fated Shaktiman bearing registration number MN-01/7654 and loaded with essential commodities from Jiribam was enroute to Mandeu village of Tousem sub-division in Tamenglong district when the mishap occurred.
The deceased have been identified as Haimasuang (18), Thomas (40), Takutheung (65), Iheule (17) and Suman Das (22) .

Both Haimasuang and Thomas were residents of Aben village while Takutheung and Iheule were from New Mandeu village.
Suman Das hailed from Shalchapra in Cachar district of Assam.
The driver of the Shaktiman, Pouhen Chongloi (38) of Kaimai village has been taken into the custody by Jiri Police and the bodies kept at Jiri Police Station.
Meanwhile, suspected economic blockade supporters have set ablaze a cement laden truck near Awangkhul section of NH 53 in the early hours today.
A police report said the ill-fated truck (MN04A/0745) was among several other vehicles that left Jiribam on May 27 with security escort.
However, the vehicle developed technical problem and was stranded near Awangkhul of Tamenglong district.
The truck was set on fire at around 4.30 am today.
Police sources speculate that the truck might have been set ablaze in retaliation of police crackdown at Noney Bazar area of the Imphal-jiribam route yesterday.
Police fired tear gas canisters at near noney Bazar to disperse an agitated mob who had converged there after a fuel tanker turned turtle.
Atleast three persons were injured in the police action.
Even as the fuel tanker remains at the same spot of accident, about 20 vehicles, including passenger carriers reached Imphal from Jiribam side today.
