Imphal, March 19 2018:
Out of 2.5 lakh households of the State belonging to BPL category which have been listed in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011, only 30,362 households have been given free LPG connections so far under the Pradhan Mantri UjjwalaYojana(PMUY).
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PMUY at the National level, the scheme was launched in the State on June 5 last year and it set a target of providing free LPG connections to 2.5 lakh households which have been listed in the SECC 2011.According to information received from the IOC's Imphal Divisional Office, 37856 households have their KYCs enrolled under the scheme whereas 30362 households have been provided free LPG connections.
Meanwhile, the Government of India has adopted a decision to bring all economically backward families within the ambit of PMUY regardless of whether they have been enlisted in SECC 2011.The Government of India set a target of providing free LPG connections to five crore households under PMUY when the scheme was launched.
To achieve this target, the Union Government sanctioned Rs 8000 crore.
PMUY is quite popular among women specially in rural areas of the country.
Taking due note of the momentous response received from different quarters of the country, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs headed by the Prime Minister adopted a decision to bring poor families of rural areas within the ambit of PMUY even though they are not listed in the SECC 2011.Subsequently, another Rs 4800 crore was allocated for the same purpose in addition to the Rs 8000 crore already allocated, informed the source.
Correspondingly, the target of providing free LPG connections has been raised to eight crore families, and the revised target should be achieved by 2020.As decided by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, ST, SC, beneficiaries of PMAY (Gramin), AAY, forest dwellers, Most Backward Classes, Tea and ex-Tea Garden Tribes and people residing in islands and rivers would be brought within the scope of PMUY.
With the exception of beneficiaries of PMAY, oil marketing companies operating in the State have little knowledge about the classes of people which have been brought within the ambit of PMUY anew.
Nonetheless, Oil Industry Manipur Deputy General Manager (Retail Sales) and SLC Sinam Ibungoton has written to the CAF&PD Commissioner seeking details about the new groups of people who have been made eligible for PMUY, added the source.
