Imphal, June 04 2024:
People have urged the State Government to look into the breach at Sekmai dam canal that caused flooding and widespread damage to paddy fields and houses.
This appeal was made by locals of Sekmai when a team of United Committee Manipur (UCM) Sekmai Unit inspected the affected sites today.
Notably, the mini dam was breached on May 28 due to a sudden rise in level of river water and strong current.
Water gushing out of the mini dam swept away five houses at Awang Leikinthabi Shantipur forcing the families to seek shelter in safer locations.
The flood damaged around 2000 Paris (2023.43 hectares) of paddyfields at Awang Potsangbam Khunou, Awang Potsangbam Khullen, Awang Wabagai, Maiba Khul, Nilakuthi, Koirengei, Mongjam, Keikol and Leikinthabi.
Conveying their grievances to the UCM Sekmai Unit members, the locals appealed for rehabilitation packages for the affected locals and urged the Government to take up appropriate measures to prevent future breach of the dam.
