Imphal, August 22:
The 73rd death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang who led the peoples movement against the hegemony of British colonial powers in early parts of 20th century would be observed on August 29 all over the State.
The main function of the observance would be held at GM Hall here under the joint aegis of All Zeliangrong Arts and Cultural Organisation (AZACO), Manipur; All Manipur Ethnical Socio-Cultural Organisation and All Clubs, Organisations, Associations and Meira Paibis Lup (ACOAM-Lup).
The underlining theme of the commemorative event would be the public demand for withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from Manipur, a joint statement issued by publicity committee of the three organisations said today.
The joint statement hailed Haipou Jadonang as one of the pioneering leaders of the State who led the people to raise their voice against the oppressive policies of the British colonial powers during early parts of 20th centuries.
Born in a hamlet of the remote Kambiron village of Tamenglong district in 1905, Jadonang was a God fearing and patriotic person.
He led peoples move- ment and revolted against the British over undue imposition of house tax and forced labour on the people of Manipur.
He was one of the true sons of the soil who demanded independence from British colonial yoke, for which he was falsely implicated in a murder case and executed publicly by hanging without conducting any trial near Nambol river behind Imphal Jail on August 29, 1931.Considering these facts, the joint statement wondered why the State Govt should not be giving due recognition to Haipou Jadonang.
The joint statement, while urging the to the people to come and pay their homage to Haipou Jadonang on the occasion of his death anniversary function being organised at GM Hall on August 29, has also appealed to other organisations in different parts of the State to organise similar commemorative events on the said day.
