Imphal, October 26 2024:
For the first time in Manipur, doctors at Little Clinic have removed a tumour from the brain of a 58-year-old man while he was still awake.
The patient hails from Hiyanglam in Kakching district, and was admitted to the hospital on October 23 .
Speaking to the media at the Little Clinic at Nagaram, Consultant Neuro surgeon Dr Chandrakumar Thounaojam said the "awake craniotomy" was successfully performed on the patient on October 24 .
Awake craniotomy or awake brain surgery is a type of procedure performed on the brain while the patient is awake and alert.
Dr Chandrakumar said the tumour was detected between the brain's motor cortex and motor speech, and this prompted the doctors to use the "awake craniotomy" .

He said that the awake craniotomy lowers the risk of damage to functional areas of the brain that could affect vision, movement or speech.
Explaining, he said, to avoid damage to these functional areas such as motors that control speech, vision and movement, during the surgery, the patient is asked a series of questions and given simple tasks to move the limbs.
Throughout the surgery, the patient's response and brain activity are monitored, allowing the surgeon to know exactly which areas of the brain control the motors and avoid them, he said.
The surgery took 4 hours.
The patient was conscious during and after the operation, Dr Chandrakumar said.
Before the surgery, the patient was having trouble with speech and often talking unconsciously.
Now, these have been cured after the surgery.
He is now able to eat and drink properly, he added.
The patient's family members thanked the Little Clinic and Dr Chandrakumar for the successful surgery.
