Pallel 'public curfew' cut short

Kakching, May 16 2015 : The Pallel area 'public curfew' enforced by the Umang Lai Kanba Lup (UKAL) and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the Laithok Ching shooting incident has been cut short from 48 hours to 24 hours.

Sources in the JAC said the strike that began from Saturday dawn had been cut short.

The strike paralysed normal life in Pallel area including Pallel market and Imphal-Moreh road.

The public curfew was imposed by the UKAL and JAC protesting the State Government's failure to fulfill their demands.

A joint statement by the UKAL and JAC said the strike has been cut short after Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam assured to meet the demands at the earliest.

Representatives of the UKAL and JAC met Gaikhangam in his official quarters here, it said, adding that the Deputy CM stated that the delay in fulfilling their demands was due to the model code of conduct now in force.

Gaikhangam further appealed to them to withdraw the public curfew in the interest of general public and the ensuing Autonomous District Council (ADC) election scheduled for June 1 as well.

Several vehicles were stranded along the NH-2 section due to the strike.

However, unwanted incidents were not reported during the course of the agitation.

One person was killed and four others were injured in the Laithok Ching shooting that took place on May 5.At least three suspects have been arrested by police in connection the fatal shooting incident.

Security measures were being taken up in and around Pallel under the supervision of DIG Range-II S Ibocha to prevent untoward incidents, police sources informed.
