Imphal, February 28 2024: Manipur University women's foil team today won a gold medal to add to university's tally at the IV Khelo India University Games 2023-24 being underway in Guwahati.

On the last day of the fencing competition, Manipur's foil team comprising W Sonia, N Mina, N Daiyarani and G Priyalaxmi bagged the gold medal with a 45-39 win over Guru Nanak Dev University team in the final.

Meanwhile, men's sabre team comprising S Chingkheinganba, L Chingkheinganba, Remo Oinam and Klearin Maibam settled for a silver medal after going down by 25-45 points to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad team in the final.

In all, MU fencers bagged 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Yesterday, Waikhom Sonia had won a gold medal in the women's individual foil competition beating Riya Bakshi of Guru Nanak Dev University 15-10 in the final as Naorem Mina Devi had won a bronze medal in the same event.

Women's Epee team of Linthoi Haobam, Ph Bijiya, N Robina and K Chandrika on the other hand bagged the other bronze medal.

In athletics, Alson Oinam had won a gold medal in the men's discus throw competition yesterday as H Bhumeshwory settled for a bronze medal in the women's 1,500 m race.

In the meantime, boxer Thongam Kunjarani has assured MU at least a silver medal as she will face Poonam Kaithwas of SGB Amravati University in the women's 57-60 category final tomorrow.
