Demanding the Govt to immediately stop collection of money by the police from drivers along the Imphal-Mao highway, the Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union and Surface Transport Hills Area Drivers' Welfare Union, Manipur have warned of launching steering off stir from Feb 20 if the Govt fails to stop collection of money from drivers at six gates along the highway.
The two bodies have also submitted a memorandum each to the Dy CM and DGP in this connection today.
In a joint statement, SDDWUM and STHADWUM said that collection of illegal tax along the highways is one of the important factors responsible for the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities in the State.
Seeking the intervention of the State Govt in this regard, the statement also urged the authority concerned to acknowledge the sufferings of the drivers plying along the highways.
It also urged the Govt to notify at the earliest which among the six police gates along Imphal-Mao highway are authorised ones.
