Imphal, February 11 2015:
Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has called a 24-hour bandh in Ukhrul district tomorrow (Thursday), the day on which Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh is scheduled to visit
the district.
The bandh has been called on the alleged ground that the State Government has failed to initiate action to flush out underground elements from Nambashi and its adjacent villages despite the increasing anti-social activities in the area.
The decision to call the bandh, which will commence from the intervening night of February 11 and February 12, was resolved at a meeting convened at the office of the TNL at Ukhrul district headquarter this afternoon.
The meeting reviewed the situation at Nambashi and its adjoining villages under Kasom Khullen sub-division of the district in which many untoward incident involving armed underground elements have been reported.
The meeting reportedly observed that no appropriate action was initiated to check the increasing activities of the underground elements in the area.
On February 5 last, an IED planted by suspected underground cadres went-off killing a villager and injuring another one.
Earlier, there was an incident of three staff of the ABCL Private Limited being abducted on January 23 last by suspected armed underground cadres.
Observing an increase in the underground related activities in the district in the recent past, the meeting alleged that the State Government has initiated no action to curb the activities of the underground groups.
TNL further alleged that valley based underground cadres are indulging in checking and frisking villagers at Tarong village and its surrounding areas.
They were further indulging in planting bombs at inter-village roads creating panic and fear among the villagers of the area.
In the meantime, police and other security establishments in the district have been asked to remain alert during the bandh as volunteers and supporters of the organizations are likely to resort to violent activities while enforcing the strike.
Interestingly, the bandh will come amid the plan of the Chief Minister to visit the district on February 12 to lay the foundation stone of a district Court campus in the district headquarters.
