ADC polls likely to be put on hold

Imphal, February 11 2015:
Even as the tenure of the present Autonomous District Councils (ADC) of the six hill districts is set to expire in June this year, no process for conducting the ADC elections has yet been initiated.
ADC election was last held in 2010 after a gap of 20 years.
According to a source, the State Govt is yet to take a decision for conducting the ADC elections before the expiry of the present term.
The source also confided the likelihood of putting on hold the ADC polls.
The Govt is understood to have informally deliberated to conduct the ADC poll in October this year.
There is no formal intimation yet from the TA & Hills Dept of the State Govt to the State Election Commission in this regard although the Govt is considering the conduct of the election informally.
The Govt is also informally deliberating on conducting elections for the six ADCs �Chandel, Churachandpur, Sadar Hills, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul, in October this year.
Meanwhile, some candidates have started campaigning for the ADC polls in Senapati district, according to a report from our correspondent.
It may be mentioned here that the last ADC elections were conducted amidst boycott from some quarters.
