Sit-ins demand NRC, SoO end; release of VDFs

Kege Moirang Kendra Apunba Lup (MENKAL) on Tuesday launched two-day sit-in protest demanding that the ensuing state assembly address abrogation of SoO agreement signed with Kuki armed groups and withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the state.
Speaking on the sidelines, KEMKAL general secretary Hemam Somikanta insisted that the assembly adopt resolution for termination of the SoO agreement as Kuki militants have been violating the ground rules, removal of Assam Rifles from the state owing to their partial and unjust actions between the warring communities, and implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.
He also cautioned that the organisation along with the people of the state will launch agitations if their demands are not met.
In another sit-in-protest organised by Toupokpi Apunba Meira Paibi Lup on Tuesday demands were raised for unconditional release of VDF Aribam Abon, who has been abducted by unknown miscreants from his house around 8.30 pm Monday.
According to a meira paibi, Aribam Abon (38), son of late Khpmei of Toupokpi Awang Mamang Leikai under the Bishnupur police station was whisked away from his residence by unknown miscreants who came in two Gypsy vehicles.
Meanwhile, another VDF namely Chabungbam Premjit (31) son of Dhananjoy of Phubala Awang Mamang Leikai who was posted at Bishnupur DC complex had also been nabbed from his residence by unidentified armed miscreants who came in two Gypsy vehicles around 4 pm on Monday, she added.
