Bishnupur, June 25 2021:
Two families in Bishnupur district, whose houses have been damaged by waterlogging due to alleged poor policy of the government authority, have warned of digging up the NH 102 (Tiddim Road) to make way for the clogged drain water to flow.
The government developed the Old Cachar Road, which lies to the south of Bishnupur district hospital, three years ago but the drainage was left out by the work agency concerned.
As a result, the two families have been facing waterlogging throughout the rainy season all these years and it damaged their houses making them useless.
The two affected families are now taking refuge in the houses of other families of the locality.
The two houses belong to Keithellakpam Tombi (60) wife of late Jadumani and Keisham Shama (50) wife of late Yaima of Bishnupur Ward No 4.According to Tombi, they have been facing immense hardships even when there is slightest rainfall due to irresponsible conduct of the government at the time of developing the Old Cachar Road about three years ago.
This year, the mud walls got washed away and their houses have been inundated.
They have no choice but to take refuge in other's place.
They have raised the issue with the municipal council on several occasions but no steps have been taken up so far.
Originally, the drain water was supposed to pass through a culvert across Tiddim Road and fall into Thabakhong stream near Loukoipat.
However, the work agency did not upgrade the culvert at the time of developing the road and it resulted in inundation of their homestead areas, she said.
She then appealed to the authority concerned to take necessary measures so as to address the issue at the earliest failing which, she warned of digging up the culvert along with the local people to make way for the clogged drain water to flow.
Former councillor of Bishnupur Municipal Council Chingakham Bala also urged the authority concerned to do the needful as soon as possible.
