Imphal, April 22 2024:
Even as re-poll was conducted in 11 polling stations of the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency on Monday as per the order of the Election Commission of India (ECI) following reports of armed men intimidating election agents, capturing booth and vandalising of EVM, unidentified people allegedly threatened the inner agents of Congress party at 3/11 and 3/21 polling stations.
Informing this during a press meet held at Congress Bhawan here on Monday evening, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Kh Devbrata said that complaints have been filed with the returning officers concerned in this regard but no action has been initiated yet.
The emerging electoral system in the state marked by crimes and violence is worrisome, he said.
Disclosing that unknown persons threatened INC's inner agents at 3/11 Moirangkampu Sajeb Upper Primary School and 3/21 S Ibobi Primary School, Khurai Thangjam Leikai under Khurai assembly constituency over the phone on Monday warning them of dire consequences if they remain inside the polling stations, Devbrata contended that the phone calls were made from the number 8131063440 with complaints filed with the RO.
The party would appreciate if the police trace the number and arrest the person, he said.
The party demanded re-poll in nearly 50 polling stations citing widespread rigging and intimidation of voters.
However, the commission ordered re-poll in only 11 polling stations, which is very unfortunate.
The emerging trend of electoral system in the state is disturbing and not hopeful of a democratic and peaceful road ahead, he said, while denouncing the government for ignoring such a matter of grave concern.
