Imphal, February 27 2024:
Stating that the Tribal Areas and Hills Department has been rendered defunct at the juncture as the minister concerned is not in the state due to the crisis situation, former ADC members have demanded the government to change the present minister concerned and replace him by an MLA of the valley.
Addressing media persons at the Sangakpham ADC office, here, on Tuesday, Ukhrul ADC former executive member Wungreiyo Ningshen expressed concerned over the prevailing situation in the state and deplored that the TA and Hills department is akin to a rudderless ship as the minister concerned is out of station.
As such, the state government should change the present Tribal Areas and Hills minister and replace him by an MLA elected from the valley constituency.
On the other hand, Wungreiyo Ningshen maintained that role of local self-government is crucial for equal development of both hills and valley, and appealed to the authority concerned to conduct election to the ADC alongside that of the Lok Sabha.
Equating non-conduct of the ADC elections to destroying the three-tier system of the governance, he said that over three years have passed since the ADC election has not been conducted consequently creating huge problems in taking up developmental works at the grass roots level.
As assembly constituencies in the hills are spread over large and difficult geographical terrains, it is not possible for the local MLA to cater to the needs of the entire constituency, he noted.
Under such condition, the role of ADCs is enormous, the Ukhrul ADC former executive member said.
