135th birth anniversary of Laininghal Naoriya Phulo observed

The Meetei Marup, Meetei Leipak celebrated the 135th birth anniversary Laininghal Naoriya Phulo at its Wangkhei Thambalkhong office premises, here, on Wednesday.
The birth anniversary function of Naoriya Phula commenced with furling of the 7-coloured flag of Meetei Marup by its advisor Saranthem Shyamdas along with offering of floral tributes to the photo of Naoriya Phulo.
Speaking at the occasion, Meetei Marup secretary general Angorhcha Soram Gojendro Meetei said that ever since the setting up of Meetei Marup in 1945, the organisation has been organising the birth anniversary of Laininghal Naoriya Phulo.
However, this time, the birth anniversary celebration has been done in small way due to the prevailing situation in the state.
He further stated that Naoria Phulo was one of the pioneers who played a crucial role in reviving Meitei religion along with preservation and promotion of the Manipuri language.
During his lifetime, he wrote many proses and poems that depicted Meitei religion, culture and so on.
On April 20, 1930, he set up the Apokpa Marup at Laishram Khul in Cachar with a vision to propagate Meitei religion, culture and tradition.
He later on assigned the work for further promotion of Meitei religion and culture to three elderly people who established the Meetei Marup in Manipur only in 1945 four years after his death.
He also informed that various memorandums have been submitted to the state government to observe the birth anniversary of Naoriya Phulo at the state level in addition to urging the government to recognise the 36-letter 'Meetei Yelhou Mayek' and include in the syllabus till the primary level.
However, the state has still not fulfilled the demands.
The function was attended by retired agriculture AO Khangembam Mangijao, Meetei Marup advisor Sarangthem Shyamdas and member Sarangthem Gopaldas Meetei as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
