Imphal, February 11 2015:
Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) on Wednesday called for a 24-hour bandh in Ukhrul district of Manipur on Thursday, the day Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh is scheduled to visit the District.
The bandh has been called against the State government's failure to initiate action to "flush out underground elements" from Nambashi and its adjacent villages of the District despite increasing anti-social activities in the area.
The bandh will begin from the intervening night of February 11 till February 12 .
The decision was taken at a meeting convened TNL at Ukhrul District headquarters Wednesday afternoon.
The meeting also reviewed the situation at Nambashi and its adjoining villages under Kasom Khullen Sub-Division of the District where incidents involving armed underground elements have been reported.
The meeting reportedly observed that no appropriate action was initiated to check the increasing activities of the underground elements in the area.
On February 5 last, an IED blast killed a villager and injured to another person.
Earlier, there was an incident of abduction of three staff members of ABCL Private Limited on January 23 last by suspected armed underground cadres.
Observing an increase in the underground related activities in the recent past, the meeting alleged that State Government has taken no action to curb the activities of the underground.
Alleging that valley based underground cadres were indulging in checking and frisking of villagers at Tarong Village and its surrounding areas, TNL said planting of bombs along inter-village roads has created a fear psychosis in the area.
In the meantime, police and other security personnel in the District have been asked to remain alert during the bandh as volunteers and supporters of the organizations are likely to resort to violent means while enforcing the bandh call.
Interestingly, the bandh has been called on a day Manipur Chief Minister is reportedly scheduled to lay the foundation stone of a district court campus in the District headquarters.
