Lamka, December 11 2013:
Seeking to clarify the basis on which the Kom Union, Manipur (KUM) was formed in 2004 at the Imphal Press Club, incumbent President of KUM said following the balkanization of Komrem, the Kom tribe formed their own union in the name and style of Kom Union.
A statement issued by K Wangkhothang, President KUM said, prior to the formation of Komrem Union, Manipur there was Kom association-cum-sports conference in the early 1950s and conferences were held at different places like Thangkanphai, Dolang, Lamdangmei and Nungsai Chiru.
As per the record and the constitution, Komrem Union, Manipur (KRUM) was formed in 1958 with the consent of five tribes, namely, Kom tribe, Chiru tribe, Aimol tribe, Koireng tribe and Purum tribe.
(L) Teba Karong, ex-forest minister was nominated as the 1st President of KRUM.
Since then Komrem Union was the common platform for the five mentioned tribes.
However, from 1999 to 2006 Komrem Union was in dormant and became defunct.
It was during this period that Chiru tribe, Koireng tribe and Aimol tribe formed their own tribe union/student organization without the consent of KRUM.
With the balkanization of Komrem, the Kom tribe has formed their own union Kom Union, Manipur.
The statement added that, S Robert was unanimously elected as the first President of KUM.
Manglholer was elected the second President at Kangngathei village along with eight members.
The incumbent President Wangkhothang Karong is appointed as the interim President of KUM till general election of the union is being held.
KUM is thus the apex body for the entire Kom community with several Kom welfare organisations formed under its patronage and approval, it said.
