T20 Open Cricket Tourney kicks off at Kangpokpi

Kangpokpi, March 17 2021: The first edition of T20 Open Cricket Tournament organized by Kangpokpi Cricket Association under the aegis of District Sports Association, Kangpokpi Sadar Hills was kicked off in style today at Brig M Thomas Ground, Kangpokpi.

The tournament is being organized in memory of (L) S Thanglienmang Kipgen, popularly known as Mangboi, who was one of the cricketing pioneers in Kangpokpi.

Mangboi was instrumental in introducing the game of cricket in Kangpokpi 20 years ago and a founder member of Kangpokpi Cricket Association.

The tournament carries a trophy and cash prize of Rs 50,000 for the champions team and of Rs 20,000 cash prize and a trophy for the runners up.

The inaugural ceremony of the tournament was graced by Addl SP (Ops) Lalminlen Misao as the chief guest while Lunseh Kipgen, Chairman Kangpokpi Town Committee and Dennis Misao, Director cum Principal, Lighthouse School Kangpokpi attended as functional president and guest of honour respectively.

Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization president, Hekim Hangshing and secretary, Ramte Kipgen; Kangpokpi Youth Union secretary, Lalkholen Kipgen and some members of the town Committee also attended as special guests apart from family members of late S Thanglienmang Kipgen.

The chief guest in his speech during the opening function stressed on the importance of participation, determination and discipline in becoming a successful sportsperson.

Lunseh Kipgen and Dennis Misao, Director cum Principal of Lighthouse School also spoke on the occasion.

Family members of Mangboi presented one cap each as a souvenir to all the players.

The inaugural match was played between Mangboi Memorial Team Kangpokpi and Karong Knight Riders wherein the former team won by 5 wickets.

After winning the toss, Karong Knight Riders opted to bat first and posted a total of 104 runs in 20 over before Mangboi Memorial Team Kangpokpi chased down the target with 5 wickets left to spare.

Mantripukhri Cricket Team will play KUCC Kanglatongbi in the next match tomorrow before SDCA, Senapati play A&A Pictures, Kangpokpi in the third match latter in the day.
