Cough syrup worth Rs 2.36 lakh seized

A large number of cough syrup (Torvirex) with codeine content has been seized by a combined team of police, Assam Rifles and local club volunteers.
Briefing media persons at his Porompat office this morning, Imphal East SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam said that three individuals were apprehended in the course of a search operation carried out by a combined team of Narcotic Cell, 38 Assam Rifles and volunteers of Youth Athletic Development Association, Kshetrigao at around 4.30 pm yesterday.
The apprehended individuals have been identified as Salim Malik (41) s/o Abdul Salam of Khergao Chandam, Anish Shah (37) s/o late Karim Shah of Lilong Turel Ahanbi and Yahiya Khan (49) s/o late Helaluddin Khan of Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai.
Altogether 1180 bottles of Torvirex cough syrup of 100 ml capacity were seized from their possession along with one car (Chevrolet UVA) which they used for transporting the contraband item, Jogeshchandra said.
He said that the estimated cost of the seized cough syrup bottles is around Rs 2,36,000 in the local market.
The contraband item belonged to Salim Malik while Anish and Yahiya were acting as couriers, according to the SP.
The SP informed that all three of them would be handed over to Irilbung police station for further investigation.
He said that Imphal East District Police would carry out similar drives in future too together with other law enforcing agencies and CSOs under the Government's War on Drugs capaign.
He then sought support and cooperation of the masses to such efforts of police.
