Imphal, November 07, 2013:
The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East has extended the judicial custody of anti-AFSPA campaigner Irom Chanu Sharmila to 15 more days with effect from today.
Hardly 24 hours into her 14th year of fast demanding complete repeal of the infamous AFSPA 1958, Sharmila was produced before the Court today.
Speaking to newspersons after returning to the security ward of JNIMS Hospital, where she is being confined for over a decade, Sharmila said her struggle is not only against the Malom massacre or limited to the citizens of Manipur but is a campaign for restoring rights of mankind and humanity.
Regretting that in Manipur there is no freedom of expression with the people continuing to feel highly insecure, she also strongly lamented certain elements in the society with vested interest trying to politicise her campaign against AFSPA and other draconian laws.
While asserting that there is no question of relenting from her present stand to expose cruelties of all inhumane acts, Sharmila also urged the common public to intensify the campaign against AFSPA and contended that the Government has been making all out efforts to demoralise the people in order to subdue the ongoing campaign.
