Imphal, April 13 2011:
The Assam Rifles has categorically dismissed allegations by the Churachandpur District Students' Association (CDSU) that their volunteers were beaten by the Assam Rifles at Salbung cemetery area near Churachandpur on April 11 as false and misleading.
A PIB (DW) release quoting Assam Rifles authorities as saying that the CDSU statement issued to the media was an attempt to defame the Assam Rifles also issue a detailed clarification on the matter.
The National Institute of Open School Students' Union, Churachandpur and Parents' Association had called "Chakka Bandh" along the ImphalTiddim Road from Churachandpur to Imphal from 5 am to 3.30 pm on April 6, 7, 11, 13 and 21 demanding reshifting of NIOS exam centre to Churachandpur.
The bandh was peaceful on the first two days, however on April 12, the AR post at Tuibong received a complaint from civilians that the bandh is being imposed by CDSU and representatives of the Union blocked the traffic along the Imphal-Tiddim road at Salbung village including forcible confiscation of admit cards and returning the students, the PIB (DW) release maintained.
It also informed that the Company Commander with an AR column reached the location at Salbung, intervened and dispersed the crowd and regulated the traffic peacefully.
Subsequently the miscreants moved to village Koite and resumed their activities of blocking the traffic, it mentioned adding that the AR column again intervened and dispersed the crowd.
The whole process of dispersal of crowd at both locations as also regulation of traffic had been done in presence of the Company Commander and 'no force' was used during the process.
The claim of CDSU that their volunteers were taken to Salbung Cemetery and beaten "blue and black" are absolutely false and unfounded.
As a matter of fact, the peaceful means undertaken by AR Company Commander to disperse the crowd on the highway has been appreciated and welcomed by the general public of Churachandpur at large, it added.
