Personnel of 3 India Reserve Battalion (IRB) would be deployed/posted at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Umathel to facilitate resumption of normal classes with effect from tomorrow.
The State Government made the move as monetary demand from a Kuki armed group and subsequent threat to target the educational institution in case of non-compliance with the demand had led to the, Vidyalaya authorities cancelling normal classes.
According to an informed source, the State Government approved proposal for setting up the IRB post to protect the Vidyalaya based on report submitted to the Government after spot inspection and situational assessment made jointly by the Thoubal district's Deputy Commissioner in-charge W Rajen, Superintendent of Police (Thoubal) Clay Khongsai and Commanding Officer of 3 1RB A Rajendro yesterday .
"It is pertinent to mention that owing to the threat and intimidation by the armed group in pursuit of its Rs 10 lakh demand from the Vidyalaya authorities parents/guardians had taken custody of over 320 students from the boarding on July 3.Moreover, around 180 non boarders had also stopped attending school/classes due to uncertainty prevailing at the Vidyalaya.
