Imphal, July 06:
Urging the State Government to stop inflation and the businessmen to stop price escalation but to ensure adequate daily wages to the workers, Khurai Puthiba Nandeib'am Leikai Apunba Nupi Lup staged a Wakat Meepham in the said locality today.
The participants asked the Government how the daily wage earners are to survive when the price of essential commodities has been rising over the past few months so much so that now 1 kg of local rice variety cost Rs 18.30, superfine Rs 18 per kg, edible oil Rs 25 per Pawa and dal Rs 36 per kg.
They pointed out that the Labour Dept of the State Government has fixed Rs 84 as the minimum daily wage of a worker.
However, when the price of one kg of rice has gone up to Rs 18.30 and other essential items have become costlier, the family of a worker having five-six members would be nothing left after buying 4/5 kgs of rice.
In such a situation, how they are supposed to educate their children?, the protestors demanded to know.
According to one of the women protestors, work under NREGS has been taken in the locality for the last seven days, but they have not received any ways.
No job cards have been issued to them before taking up the work, she informed.
Horeover, even if six-seven kgs of rice are being provided at the rate of Rs 8 per kg under PDS to each households, it is not being provided regularly, she complained.
