The 14 Assam Rifles under Headquarters 27 Sector Assam Rifles organised an Independence Day Civic Action Programme at Kangpokpi today.
The civic action programme included free medical camp, HIV testing, blood donation camp, dental treatment etc.
The district administration also took part in organising the programme, said PIB Defence Wing in a statement.
IGAR South Maj Gen BS Ghotra attended the function as chief guest clad in a traditional Kuki attire.
Around 250 children took part in the spot painting competition organised on the theme of Independence Day and National Integration, added the statement.
Prizes were distributed to the winners.
Mrs Rupinder Ghotra declared the programme open by releasing hydrogen filled balloons.
The IG also honoured ten village chiefs and the Women Society Kangpokpi with traditional blankets.
Youth clubs of various villages were also presented with sports equipment.
The district administration 'also contributed significantly by providing medicines, doctors and sewing machines to war widows of Assam Rifles and Army.
A number of dignitaries including the DC of Sena pati Dr Prem Singh, Col V Shome, Addl DIG Hqs 27 sector, Col BS Bedi CO of 14 AR were present at the function.
Security stepped up in Nagaland (Kohima): Security measures were geared up across Nagaland with deployment of additional police personnel to ensure peaceful celebration of Independence Day tomorrow, official sources said , today.
Although no organisations called for any strike or boycott of the day in the state, the Government strengthened security measures in all districts in view of stepped up violence by ULFA militants in bordering Assam.
Security arrangements were beefed up in border areas and Dimapur, the sources said.
At Kohima, district administration is regulating vehicular movement on routes to civil secretariat ground where Chief Minister NeiphiuRio will hoist the national tricolour tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, various Naga underground organisations today observed the 'Naga independence dav' at their respective headquarters today, reports reaching here said.
The then Naga National Council, the first political organisation of the Nagas, declared 'Naga independence' on August 14, a day ahead of the country's independence.
