Imphal, March 28:
A large stone which will be installed at the graveyard of former Minister Ng Luikang as a megalith has been drawn up from Marek Karii, Maram and put up at the late Minister's graveyard.
|
Ng Luikang was first elected to the Manipur State Assembly in 1980 from Tadubi Assembly Constituency.
Such practice of installing megalith over the graveyard of departed leaders is a proud tradition of the Maram tribe.
The villagers' effort to pull up the stone from a deep gorge came after 40 years when a similar stone was drawn up to install it at the graveyard of the uncle of present Tadubi A/C MLA K Raina.
Among the Maram tribe, the tradition of pulling up memorial stone is known as Marahang Tuchai.
Any family desirous of conducting the Marahang Tuchai should first seek approval of the chief, village elders and community leaders.
All the villagers participating in the Marahang Tuchai cannot take meal on the particular day.
They can take only pounded over-baked rice with chilly and salt.
The Marahang Tuchai performed today was attended by more than 3000 Maram villagers.
According to Dr Ng Peter, son of late Ng Luikang, 210 barrels of country liquor were specifically brewed for today's ceremony.
He also expressed great joy on performing the proud tradition of Marahang Tuchai for his late father.
The megalith will be installed on May 16, the first death anniversary of Ng Luikang after inscribing a brief biography of the former Minister, Peter added.
Other than K Raina the well known personalities who were present today included former Minister Francis Ngajokpa and CO of 22 Assam Rifles.
