Drivers of two trucks transporting rice for the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have been kidnapped by suspected undergrounds on the way to Imphal at Khongnem village under Senapati district along NH-39 on Thursday.
The two drivers, Shanta of Wabagai of truck MN04A-4438 and Laimayum Kullabi of Maharabi of truck MN01-7653, were kidnapped on Thursday last keeping behind the two trucks with rice loads from Dimapur FCI godown.
The loads are to be deposited at FCI godown in Imphal.
The kidnapping of the drivers came to know to the troops of Assam Rifles who enquired when the two trucks were found stranded in unusual manner on the side of the road since the last three days to the handymen of the trucks.
Following the information transferred by the troops of 39 Assam Rifles, a team of Senapati police rushed to the spot and taken into custody the two trucks Saturday, an official report received here said.
Police suspected extortion demand from an underground group operating actively in the area behind the kidnapping of the drivers.
Senapati police registered a case and started investigation into the missing of the two drivers.
The instance was the fourth related with the activities of suspected undergrounds towards the trucks plying on the Imphal-Dimapur section of the NH-39 in the recent time after the looting of around Rs 20 lakhs worth goods from an Imphal bound truck.
The looting of Imphal bound truck (bearing registration no.AS 01 BC-547) occurred at Chumukedima of Nagaland on the NH-39 on March 19 which was followed by hijacking of another truck (NL01G-0737) ferrying iron rod on the same route within Senapati.
Another case of looting a truck transporting life saving drugs on the Imphal-Dimapur section of the NH-39 at Taphou in Senapati district of Manipur reported to the police on March 25 last.
The life saving drugs from the Imphal bound truck bearing registration no.MN-01C-7788 took place on March 13 but the owner of the vehicle lodged the complaint with the police Porompat police station on March 24 last.
