Imphal, December 22 2016:
Sudeep Jain, Director General of Election Commission of India, has said that only a few select Kendras out of the total 60 in the State will use Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in the coming State Assembly election.
The Director General confirmed the use of VVPAT at an EVM and VVPAT Training cum Demonstration programme organised at State Academy of Training, Takyel-pat, by the Chief Electoral Officer under the aegis of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
He pointed out that only a few selected Kendras out of the total 60 in the State will initially use VVPAT as the election is to be held across five States including Manipur at the same time.

VVPATs were used for the first time in Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Meghalaya, Delhi NCT and Rajasthan after a recommendation by an expert committee and the ECI.
VVPAT works in such a way that the voters are provided a slip containing the names, serial numbers and symbols of the candidates.
Speaking about the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), he said, "The rumours that EVM are easy to manipulate are baseless.
The voting standards and techniques used in India are some of the best in the world" .
Even the EVMs given to the polling station are randomised, he added.
Speaking at the event, Chief Electoral Officer Vivek Kumar Dewagan said that the ECI has sent around 1000 EVMs in order to familiarise the people with the techniques before the election.
He urged the youth of the State to take part in the training for which the EVMs would be installed at 40 higher secondary schools of the State.
